Synology DSM 7.0 is out!

In this article I’m going to show you how to upgrade your Synology DiskStation to DSM 7.0. I’m using an DS970+ and I freaking love this thing! It’s got 3TBs of storage and I use it as a Time Machine backup source for my MacBook Pro, as well as cold storage for raw and edited files for The Art of Network Engineering Podcast that I co-host and edit content for, and it’s part of my lab as well!

DSM – or DiskStation Manager – 7.0 has been released and there’s a ton of new exciting features, improvements, and upgrades. One such feature, you need to opt in for, is a cloud monitoring service called Active Insight. Active Insight will monitor the health of your Synology NAS devices and proactively alert you to issues it finds! You can opt into this service after the upgrade completes. This requires a Synology account, the same account you use for external access via Quick Connect, and is absolutely free.
Upgrading your DiskStation to 7.0
Go to your control panel and then click on Update and Restore.

Then click download in the box announcing 7.0.

After it finishes downloading the download box will change to “Upgrade” – click it!

There’s a notice window that pops-up. You must scroll to the bottom of that window, check the box stating you understand and accept the risks involved in upgrading your system. Then click next.

Next, don’t unplug power or turn off your DS during this process, click Yes to begin.

Then just watch and wait as the magic happens:

After the updater finishes a 10 minute count down will show up. This process could take up to 10 minutes to complete, although mine finished in about half that time.

After the reboot there was some last minute installation and configuration and then I was presented with a beautiful new logon screen!

Once logged in I could take a tour of the new features in DSM 7. One of the other new features is the support for automatic installation of CRITICAL updates. These are the updates that include important security patches or bug fixes.
For a full list of new features in DMS 7.0 check out the DSM 7.0 page.
As always, thanks for stopping by!
Cheers,
A.J.
